Framing

Gretchen wanted to step outside of the box and create non-traditional contemporary art.  Her framing technique is her way of expressing a new way to look at art.

Sometimes her framing is the most time consuming thing she does with a piece.  It can also be the most frustrating.  She tried many methods and has experimented with all sorts of media to develop her framing techniques.

There are three methods she uses to frame her paintings today:

  • Wood framing – Cut 1”x2” wood using a standard miter saw, staple the frame using a professional frame joiner, sand then paint black, and lastly attach a wire for hangingDrill holes in the finished acrylic panel then attach to the wood frame using metal fasteners.
  • Acrylic framing – Cut strips of ¼” green edge acrylic panels  from 1.5” to 2” in width using a standard table saw. Sand and then flame polish the edges using a blow torch.  Drill holes into the strips to allow for hanging wire. After clamping the strips of acrylic to a finished painting, use liquid acrylic cement to adhere the frame. Once cured add the wire hanger.
  • Metal brackets – Use chrome and polished aluminum metal brackets on some works. Attach the brackets to the wall using wall anchors. Once installed, the painting merely slides into the metal brackets and screw into place for a permanent installation.

All of Gretchen's framing methods cause the paintings to literally "float" from the wall.  She wants to see the polished edge of the acrylic panel.  Being able to see the wall behind the art adds a three dimensional effect that is very dramatic.  Lighting enhances the three dimensional effect, especially at night when shadows are cast from the  artwork to the wall.  See sample photos of  framing techniques
